Breakaway from Cancer Charity Rides
Before the professional cyclists hit the road for the second Amgen Tour of California in February, cycling enthusiasts around the country had the opportunity to participate in the Breakaway from Cancer™ charity rides in Washington D.C. (November 12), San Francisco (December 3) and Thousand Oaks (February 11). Each ride encompassed a moderate 25-mile course and was open to all levels of experienced riders.
More than 900 cyclists participated across the three rides, raising more than $132,000 for the Breakaway from Cancer non-profit partners, The Wellness Community® and the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship. In each city, the event’s top fundraiser received a Giant bike, courtesy of Giant Bicycles.
Discovery Channel® Team professional cyclist and 11-time Tour de France veteran George Hincapie participated in the rides in Washington D.C. and San Francisco, where he was joined by retired Olympian Dylan Casey. In Thousand Oaks, cycling icon Bob Roll participated.
During the ride there were fun family festivities for spectators and supporters in each city, including face painting, a caricature artist and a unicyclist clown who made original balloon creations to the delight of the children. While the riders took to the streets, the crowd danced to the sounds of the Oncotones, a band consisting of Amgen staff, healthcare professionals and professional musicians.
