November 5, 2011, Summit on Psychosocial Oncology,
Washington, D.C.

Breakaway from Cancer nonprofit partner Cancer Support Community (CSC) will host the Summit on Psychosocial Oncology, November 5th, 2011 from 9:00am - 12:00pm ET at Washington Marriot Wardman Park in Washington, D.C.


The Summit will address national progress made towards meeting needs outlined in the 2007 Institute of Medicine report Cancer Care for the Whole Patient: Meeting Psychosocial Health Needs. Susan Dentzer, Editor-in-Chief of Health Affairs, the nation's leading journal of health policy, and an on-air analyst on health issues with The NewsHour on the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), will moderate the event. Leaders in psychosocial oncology, including Dr. Stephen Edge, Chair of the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer, will outline advances towards meeting these needs. Dr. Edge will address new patient centered standards that the Commission is adopting.


CSC will host an exhibition before and directly following the Summit to showcase the important work being accomplished throughout the cancer community in meeting psychosocial needs. Medical professionals, patient advocates, survivors, policy makers, and members of the press are invited to this important event.

October 8, 2011, Breakaway from Cancer® Represented at The Dempsey Challenge presented by Amgen,
Lewiston, ME

The Dempsey Challenge presented by Amgen is a fundraising experience for The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, Maine. The Dempsey Center provides high-quality education, support and wellness services to patients, survivors and caregivers.


On October 8, a special Breakaway from Cancer walk will be taking place to honor cancer survivors. A Breakaway from Cancer Survivor Award will also be presented. Individuals can nominate themselves and others for the award via The Dempsey Challenge website.


Non-competitive walks and bike rides are scheduled for October 8 and 9, to raise funds for The Dempsey Center. While you're there, visit the Breakaway from Cancer booth. The Red Ball is an annual fundraising event held by the Young Leadership Council (YLC) of the Cancer Support Community. The event features cocktails and hors d'oeuvres, music and dancing, a raffle auction, and incredible gift bags.


The Red Ball is attended by approximately 300 upwardly mobile young to mid-career professionals each year. The mission of the YLC, is to represent a new generation of leaders who are advancing the cause of social and emotional support for people living with cancer by raising awareness and organizing philanthropic initiatives to benefit the Cancer Support Community.

The Cancer Legal Resource Center hosts regional conferences that provide patients, survivors, caregivers, advocates, and healthcare professionals with information about cancer-related legal issues including employment, insurance options, access to health care, financial planning, and many other issues.

September 15, 2011, Research and Training Institute Grand Opening and Barn Raising Event,
Philadelphia, PA

Breakaway from Cancer nonprofit partner Cancer Support Community (CSC) will host a Barn Raising and Grand Opening event for its Research and Training Institute at the CSC campus in Philadelphia.


The fundraiser will be reminiscent of a traditional barn raising - stressing the need for the community to unite in support of a common goal - and will take full advantage of the beautiful fall foliage using the indoor/outdoor space of the newly renovated Sheep Barn. Join CSC for this unique event and help to "lift" the walls and celebrate the opening of the Institute - the first institution in the United States dedicated to psychosocial, behavioral, and survivorship research and training in cancer.

July 30, 2011, "I'm Cured...Now What?" Conference for Teen and Young Adult Survivors of Childhood Cancer, Life with Cancer's 6th Annual Conference,

Childhood cancer survivors, ages 16 and over, and their parents meet to discuss the long-term effects of treatment and survivorship issues like dating and relationships, insurance, legal concerns, college, and career planning.

July 30, 2011, 7th Annual CT Challenge Bike Ride Sponsored by Amgen,
Westport, CT

The Connecticut Challenge, sponsored by Amgen, is a non-competitive premiere cycling event welcoming riders of all abilities and ages. There are several ride distances to choose from, including 10, 25, 50, 75, and a challenging 100-mile ride known as "New England's Toughest Century."


The CT Challenge believes that much more can be done to help cancer patients, funding the first cancer survivorship clinics in Connecticut and working with hospitals across the state to create survivorship programs. The CT Challenge goals are to educate survivors about the long-term effects they may face from their disease and treatment and, through the Survivorship Network, to make survivorship care easily accessible no matter where they live in the state.

Celebrating cancer survivors everywhere, the Breakaway Miles take place at select stages during the Amgen Tour of California , before the professional riders roll across the finish line. It is a special one-mile walk to honor the millions of cancer survivors worldwide.

The Champions are joined by the survivor's peloton of support team members, including caregivers, family members, and healthcare professionals who support their fight against cancer.

The Dana Point Community Cycling Foundation in collaboration with Amgen's Breakaway from Cancer initiative is actively engaging the community in a premiere event on Saturday, April 30, 2011 at the Dana Point Yacht Club, preceding the nationally recognized Breakaway from Cancer Dana Point Grand Prix of Cycling in on Sunday, May 1.


Proceeds from this year's Saturday Night event will benefit the Breakaway from Cancer nonprofit partners and the Pacific Meso Center at the Pacific Heart Lung Blood Institute in Los Angeles.

For the fifth consecutive year, CURE magazine is calling on cancer patients, survivors and caregivers from across the country to submit essays for the 2011 Extraordinary Healer Award for Oncology Nursing . The contest, made possible with financial support from Amgen Oncology and Breakaway from Cancer®, invites patients and their families to submit a 400-1000 word essay describing the compassion, expertise and helpfulness a special oncology nurse exhibited toward them during their cancer journey.


The three nurse finalists and their essayists (plus one guest each) will receive round-trip airfare and two-night accommodations in Boston, where they will be honored at a reception held in conjunction with the Oncology Nursing Society's 36th Annual Congress on April 28, 2011. During the awards reception, one nurse will be presented with the 2011 Extraordinary Healer Award for Oncology Nursing and will also receive an all-expenses-paid spa trip for two.

For the fifth consecutive year, CURE magazine is calling on cancer patients, survivors and caregivers from across the country to submit essays for the 2011 Extraordinary Healer Award for Oncology Nursing . The contest, made possible with financial support from Amgen Oncology and Breakaway from Cancer®, invites patients and their families to submit a 400-1000 word essay describing the compassion, expertise and helpfulness a special oncology nurse exhibited towards them during their cancer journey. A team of judges comprised of the CURE staff will select the top three essays. June 2, 2010, Striking the Balance Roundtable,
Chicago, IL

Eminent leaders and thinkers in the cancer community came together in early June at the American Society of Clinical Oncology annual meeting, or ASCO, for a first-of-its-kind roundtable event. The session, sponsored by Amgen and its Breakaway from Cancer initiative, was designed to highlight potential areas for improvement throughout the spectrum of cancer care, and inspire action by establishing several mandates for change for the cancer community and health policymakers.

May 24, 2010, Amgen's Breakaway Miles
Celebrating cancer survivors everywhere, the Breakaway Mile takes place during the Amgen Tour of California, before the professional riders roll across the finish. It's a special walk that crosses the finish line to honor the millions of cancer survivors worldwide, led by an individual who has been an inspiration within the local cancer community - the Breakaway from Cancer Champion. The Breakaway Mile celebrates cancer survivors and their support networks and helps increase awareness of the important resources available to people affected by cancer. The event also celebrates the many scientific innovations that contribute to new treatments for cancer patients.

April 2, 2010, Breakaway Rides presented by Specialized
Cycling enthusiasts and fans participated in the two riding events held in conjunction with the Amgen Tour of California professional cycling race to raise funds for Breakaway from Cancer .

October 2, 2009, LIVESTRONG Challenge June-October 2009
Amgen expanded the reach of its Breakaway from Cancer initiative through sponsorship of the Lance Armstrong Foundation's 2009 LIVESTRONG Challenges, which took place in four U.S. cities from June through October and raised more than $10.2 million.

October 2, 2009, The Dempsey Challenge: A Journey for Hope
Amgen served as the presenting sponsor of The Dempsey Challenge, a cycling and 5K run/walk fundraiser and related events that took place October 2-4, 2009 in Lewiston, Maine.

Similar to the support team that helps a cyclist break away from the pack, it takes a strong support network to help a person Breakaway from Cancer .

February 20, 2009, Solvang Race of Truth
Cancer survivor Scott Foraker participated in the ride of his life... to help raise cancer awareness. In 2009, the Solvang Race of Truth gave 20 qualified amateur cyclists the opportunity to ride the Stage 6 Solvang Individual Time Trial closed course one hour prior to the pros. February 8, 2009, Breakaway from Cancer Charity Rides ,
San Francisco and Thousand Oaks, CA

On February 8, 2009, Breakaway from Cancer charity bicycle rides in San Francisco and Thousand Oaks brought together 650 riders who raised more than $100,000 for the initiative's charity partners.

December 6, 2008, Bike Fest,
Ventura

Fantastic weather served as a great backdrop for this one day cycling "lifestyle" event. Approximately 200 cycling enthusiasts participated in the events, which included a 100 km and 35 km course, as well as a Family Fun Ride, and the cycling expo attracted approximately 1,500 people.

Portions of the proceeds from this event will benefit Breakaway from Cancer.

February 18, 2008, Breakaway Miles
In honor of all cancer survivors, the final mile of four stages of the 2008 Amgen Tour of California - Santa Rosa, Sacramento, San Luis Obispo and Santa Clarita - included a Breakaway Mile featuring a local cancer survivor and an Amgen scientist. Riding with them were the survivor's peloton of caregivers, family members and healthcare professionals who supported their win against cancer.

February 10, 2008, Breakaway from Cancer Charity Ride,
Palo Alto, CA

Nearly 200 cycling enthusiasts from around the Bay Area participated in a Breakaway from Cancer charity bicycle ride with professional cyclist and Amgen Tour of California stage winner George Hincapie. The ride encompassed a moderate 25-mile route throughout Palo Alto and all participants received a commemorative Amgen Breakaway from Cancer cycling jersey. Riders who achieved various fundraising levels received special incentives including a meet-and-greet with Hincapie and a road bike for the top fundraiser.

February 8, 2008, Amgen Cycling Club Presented Cycling Legend Bob Roll to Raise Funds for Breakaway from Cancer
On February 8, the Amgen Cycling Club presented "A Night with Bob Roll." Roll is a former professional cyclist and television commentator on the Versus cable television network and acted as Master of Ceremonies as he hosted two special guests: Jens Voigt and Stuart O'Grady from the CSC cycling team.

January 29, 2008, PedalFest 2008
Sponsored by Union Bank, AEG and Amgen Tour of California
In January, AEG, Amgen Tour of California and Union Bank of California hosted PedalFest to support Amgen's Breakaway from Cancer initiative. Building upon the platform established in the inaugural year of 2007, PedalFest 2008 consisted of three stationary cycling fundraising events held at Union Bank of California branches in San Francisco (January 16), Solvang (January 26), and Los Angeles (January 29).

February 27, 2007, Breakaway from Cancer Initiative Reaches Record Crowds at 2007 Amgen Tour of California
On Sunday, February 25, as Stage 7, the final stage of the 2007 Amgen Tour of California rolled in to Long Beach, it was clear that the crowds of spectators exceeded expectations, breaking the record attendance of 1.3 million for the 2006 Amgen Tour and setting a new record, nearly 1.6 million, as largest single sporting event in California history.

February 11, 2007, Breakaway from Cancer Charity Rides
Before the professional cyclists hit the road for the second Amgen Tour of California in February, cycling enthusiasts around the country had the opportunity to participate in the Breakaway from Cancer charity rides in Washington D.C. (November 12), San Francisco (December 3) and Thousand Oaks (February 11). Each ride encompassed a moderate 25-mile course and was open to all levels of experienced riders.
