Breakaway Miles
In honor of all cancer survivors, the final mile of four stages of the Amgen Tour of California – Santa Rosa, Sacramento, San Luis Obispo and Santa Clarita – will include a Breakaway Mile featuring a local cancer survivor and an Amgen scientist. Riding with them are the survivor’s peloton of caregivers, family members and healthcare professionals who supported their win against cancer. Meet the Inspirational Survivors Behind the 2008 Amgen Tour of California
Nancy Novak Sausalito
"I am with you." Those words from a Stanford oncologist helped Nancy Novak sustain an aggressive treatment plan to overcome a bleak diagnosis of stage 4 ovarian cancer more than three and a half years ago. After 21 chemotherapy sessions, Nancy discovered firsthand the special services and spiritual support needed to live with, through, and beyond cancer. That’s why she has created the nonprofit group Nancy’s List, an organization dedicated to Marin County cancer survivors and their families, enabling them to connect with a community-wide support system. Nancy’s advice to those with a new cancer diagnosis is, "Even as you face this horrendous uncertainty, give yourself permission to truly live and love." Read more patient and caregiver profiles
